The Profoto Umbrella Backpanels are essential accessories designed to convert a translucent umbrella into a “softbox-style” modifier. By covering the open back of the umbrella, you prevent light from leaking backward, ensuring all the flash’s energy is directed forward through the translucent fabric.
What is a Profoto Umbrella Backpanel?
When using a Translucent Umbrella, light typically spills in every direction—including backward toward the photographer and the rest of the studio. The Backpanel solves this by “closing” the umbrella.
Increased Efficiency: By reflecting stray light back through the umbrella, you gain roughly 1 stop of light output, allowing you to shoot at lower power or smaller apertures.
Reduced Lens Flare: It prevents light from hitting your lens directly, which significantly improves image contrast and reduces “ghosting.”
Softbox Quality: Once the backpanel is attached, the umbrella behaves like a large, round softbox, providing a very soft, directional light with a clean, contained spread.
Fast Setup: They feature an elastic pull-string or edge that snaps over the rim of the umbrella in seconds.
