Released in late 2024, the Canon EOS R5 Mark II isn’t just a spec bump; it’s a complete internal overhaul. While it retains the 45-megapixel resolution of its predecessor, it introduces a Stacked BSI CMOS sensor and a secondary “DIGIC Accelerator” processor. This combination unlocks “Accelerated Capture,” making it one of the most intelligent and responsive cameras ever built for sports, wildlife, and high-end video.
Dual Pixel Intelligent AF: This is the headline upgrade. By using Deep Learning, the camera can now recognize specific sports actions (like a “jump ball” in basketball or a “spike” in volleyball) and automatically move the AF point to the player performing the action.
Upgraded Eye Control AF: Borrowed and refined from the EOS R3, you can now select your focus point simply by looking at your subject through the viewfinder. It features a wider detection area and a faster sampling rate than previous versions.
8K 60p RAW & 4K 120p with Audio: The Mark II now handles internal 8K 60p RAW (up from 30p) and—critically—can record 4K 120p with audio. It also adds Canon Log 2, which provides even more dynamic range for professional color grading.
Pre-Continuous Shooting: The camera can buffer up to 15 frames before you even fully press the shutter button, ensuring you never miss a bird taking flight or a batter hitting a ball.
