Features

The “Pancake” lens: Tiny size, massive performance.

The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is famous for being Canon’s first “pancake” lens for the EF mount. Measuring less than an inch thick, it turns a bulky DSLR into a much more discreet, portable machine. Don’t let its tiny stature fool you; it is optically superb, often outperforming much larger and more expensive lenses in terms of center sharpness and chromatic aberration control.
Ultra-Slim Profile: At only 22mm deep, it is the most portable lens in the Canon lineup. It’s the perfect “body cap” lens for street photography, travel, and discreet documentary work.
STM (Stepping Motor): Features a lead-screw type STM motor for smooth, near-silent continuous autofocus during video recording. It’s much more fluid for video “pulling” than traditional USM motors.
Full-Frame & APS-C Compatible: While it’s a wide-normal 40mm on full-frame bodies, it becomes a fantastic 64mm equivalent portrait lens on APS-C cameras (like the 90D or Rebel series).
High Image Quality: An aspherical element is included in the design to minimize distortions and maintain sharpness from edge to edge, even at the maximum f/2.8 aperture.
